According to the 2021 Michigan Child Support Formula Manual, their income “may include the value of gifts or gratuities such as money, food, shelter, transportation, or other goods or services that a parent receives from relatives (other than a spouse), friends, or others, to the extent it: (1) Is significant and regularly reduces personal expenses, or (2) Replaces or supplements employment income.” For example, if the parent is residing with their own parent or a significant other and that person is paying the household bills for that parent’s benefit, the value of that benefit may be considered “income” when calculating child support.
